Sifter of Dust

Suppose you know the definitions
of all substances and their products,
what good is this to you?
Know the true definition of yourself.
That is essential.
Then, when you know your own definition, flee
from it,
That you may attain to the One who cannot be
defined,
O sifter of the dust.

— Rumi

  1. In the same spirit:

“After all scientific questions have been answered, the problems of life remain completely untouched.”

    – Ludwig Wittgenstein (fellow mystic)

  2. Zach, we may disagree about technology and spirituality, but I love reading your blog. A few more for you,

“I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.” – Newton

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy” – Hamlet

“There remains the final reflection, how shallow, puny, and imperfect are efforts to sound the DEPTHS in the nature of things. In philosophical discussion, the merest hint of dogmatic certainty as to finality of statement is an exhibition of folly.” – Whitehead

“Orthodoxy is just another word for ‘majority rule.’” – unknown

“Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing there is a field. I will meet you there.” – Rumi
