The Power of Our Example

“People around the world have always been more impressed by the power of our example than by the example of our power.”

–President Bill Clinton

One has to consider not only our unilateral military action, but our recently adopted policy of torture and the dismissal by the Bush administration of the laws of the Geneva Convention. I think this beautifully worded line sums it up, but I fear these kinds of issues regarding our national reputation aren’t very high on the list for many Americans. I guess it makes sense. We’ve been too busy with dividing up the world into “good and evil”, people who “love freedom” and people who don’t, Jesus vs Muhammad, etc. So much evil to eliminate, so little time…….especially for the evil that lies in our own hearts.
