Regardless of what your political tendencies might be, last night as a historic moment. I love this clip of Juan Cole, who is paid to give his political analysis but here is speaking from the heart, from a context of being African-American in this country. It’s not so much what was said, although I think Michele Obama did well. Rather, it was the site of her standing the the podium, with her daughters, representing a victory over our darker, racially divided history.
In the same way that McCain’s story of sacrifice and selflessness while serving the military and his time as a POW is an inspiring personal narrative, the story of the Obamas breaking through the obstacles that have proven unmovable for so long, it’s a moving story. And political tendencies aside, the emotion in Juan Cole’s analysis reminds us of the importance of the moment.
