Great Food In The East Valley……

… rare. There’s not a whole lot in terms of great food. Of course there’s always the major chains and overall the selection is pretty decent. But very rarely do you come across a place that is great, unique to the area and independently owned and operated. We’ve come across a place that fits the bill on all categories. It’s an Asian cuisine place called Mei Xiang. It’s located 1534 East Ray Road in Gilbert. The only reason we found it is that our daughter takes ballet lessons next door. Otherwise, I don’t think we would have happened across it. The Spring rolls with spicy mustard sauce are amazing and our favorite dish is the Mei Xiang fried rice. If you live in this area, it definitely worth checking out.

Anyone else have any tips on other places worth checking out?

  1. I’m a big fan of that Greek place we went to on Gilbert & Ray … forget what it’s called now. But they have the original one in Tempe by my house, so I still get to go 🙂

Otherwise I like to go to a few of the Middle Eastern places in Tempe, and one complex at Hardy & Baseline has an excellent Israeli restaurant and a great Ethiopian place in the same strip.

  2. Cyclo on Dobson and Chandler has wonderful Vietnamese/Thai food. I highly recommend the Bun Cha Hanoi. And the woman who owns it has a very sassy personality. I’ve been hit more than once.

  3. I was so intrigued by
Perry’s comment and the idea of there being a restaurant out in east Mesa that wasn’t a chain. so I went there last night. The food was amazingly good. Our waiter was so nervous and trying to do such a good job. I’ll definitely go back.

Another non-chain restaurant that I really, really like is Tina’s Ethiopian Cafe on Arizona Ave in chandler. Tina does everything from cooking to serving and it doesn’t seem like she has a staff, so it’s a little slow, but the food is sooo good and so inexpensive and the atmosphere is cool, you definitely feel like you are no longer in AZ.
